Free rides encourage Orange County residents and commuters to leave the car behind and try transit; Clean Air Day coincides with Rideshare Week, Oct. 5–9
ORANGE – The Orange County Transportation Authority is encouraging residents and commuters to leave the car behind and try a cleaner way to get around by offering free rides all day on OC Bus in recognition of California Clean Air Day on Wednesday, Oct. 7.
Riders with a Wave card or the Wave mobile app should tap or scan as usual when boarding but will not be charged for their ride. Those without a Wave account can simply board OC Bus for free.
Metrolink is also offering free rides on Clean Air Day, with no special ticket required.
Clean Air Day encourages Californians to take steps that can help improve air quality, including choosing public transportation and other alternatives to driving alone.
Choosing transit helps reduce the number of cars on the road. OCTA’s OC Bus fleet runs on clean, renewable energy and continues moving toward a zero-emission future as part of OCTA’s commitment to sustainability and providing a balanced transportation network.
Clean Air Day also falls during Rideshare Week, Oct. 5–9, providing another opportunity for Orange County commuters to try alternatives to driving alone.

During Rideshare Week, commuters can pledge to replace at least one solo drive with another transportation option, including OC Bus, Metrolink, vanpooling, carpooling, biking or walking. Participants who make a pledge can be entered for a chance to win a Commuter Essentials Kit, including Apple AirPods, a travel backpack, water bottle, car charger and an Amazon Kindle.
Free rides on OC Bus and Metrolink on Clean Air Day count toward the Rideshare Week pledge.
OCTA hopes that residents who try transit on Clean Air Day will experience firsthand how OC Bus can provide an affordable and convenient alternative for getting to work, running errands or exploring Orange County.
OC Bus can also connect riders to parks, trails and open spaces throughout the county, including regional parks and wilderness areas served by existing bus routes.
