SR-57 Truck Climbing Lane Project
SR-57 Truck Climbing Lane Project
The State Route 57 (SR-57) Truck Climbing Lane Project is studying proposed improvements along northbound SR-57 in the City of Brea to improve operational efficiency of truck traffic to accommodate regional goods movement through the corridor.
Public Scoping Meeting
The project is currently in the preliminary environmental and engineering review phase, also known as Project Approval and Environmental Document (PA&ED). This phase includes a public scoping process to consider input from the public, agencies, and stakeholders on issues that should be addressed in the environmental document.
Community members are encouraged to participate in the environmental process by attending the virtual scoping meeting for the proposed State Route Truck Climbing Lane Project. The meeting will provide an opportunity to learn about the project, preliminary alternatives, and share comments or concerns. All comments received during the scoping period will become part of the public record and will be considered in development of the environmental document.
Project Overview
The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), in partnership with the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA), is proposing to improve traffic on northbound SR-57 between Lambert Road and the Orange/Los Angeles County line. The project proposes to extend the existing general-purpose lane as a truck-only climbing lane to reduce slowdowns caused by steep grades, heavy truck traffic, and a lane drop near the Lambert Road off-ramp.
The purpose of the project is to:
- Improve operational efficiency of truck traffic on northbound SR-57 between Lambert Road and the Orange County/Los Angeles County line to accommodate regional goods movement.
- In the northbound direction, extend the outside General Purpose (GP) lane beyond the existing lane drop at the Lambert Road off-ramp through the steep and sustained-grades to provide separation of truck traffic
- Improve multimodal travel and use advanced technology, where feasible, to help manage current and future transportation needs.
The project is evaluating one No Build and two Build Alternatives.
Proposed Improvements
Alternative. 1 – No Build
Existing configuration of the project area is maintained.
Alternative 2 – Build Alternative
This alternative would add one truck climbing lane on northbound SR-57 from Lambert Road to just south of Tonner Canyon Road.
Alternative 3 – Build Alternative
This alternative would add one truck climbing lane on northbound SR-57 from Lambert Road to the Orange County/Los Angeles County line.
