I-605/Katella Avenue Interchange
Construction Updates
OCTA, in cooperation with Caltrans, is improving the local interchange at Interstate 605 and Katella Avenue to improve mobility, smooth traffic flow, and enhance pedestrian and bicycle facilities.

Project Details
The I-605/Katella Avenue interchange connects the San Gabriel River Freeway, a major north-south transportation route in Orange and Los Angeles counties, with Katella Avenue, an east-west regional corridor.
The project will improve overall operations for vehicles, bicyclists and pedestrians by:
- Modifying northbound and southbound ramps at Katella Avenue
- Closing the gaps in existing bike lanes by adding Class II bike lanes along eastbound and westbound Katella Avenue
- Enhancing sidewalk connectivity between Coyote Creek Channel and Epson Way
- Constructing Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) curb ramps and installing new signage and crosswalk pavement markings

Construction Activities
Katella Avenue Updates
Construction is underway and generally occurs Monday through Friday, from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. Intermittent night work, typically between 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. may be required for certain activities.
Eastbound Katella Avenue Activities
Crews will be removing the sidewalk on eastbound Katella Avenue between Epson Way and the freeway. Once complete, crews will excavate the roadway to make room for the new bike lane.
Eastbound Katella has been reduced to three lanes between the northbound I-605 off-ramp and Epson way. Please use caution while driving through construction area.
Sidewalk Access
While the sidewalks on both eastbound and westbound of Katella are under construction, pedestrians can use a protected walkway on eastbound Katella, which will serve as a temporary pedestrian detour route.

Retaining Wall Construction
Construction on a new retaining wall along the northbound I-605 on-ramp is underway with crews preforming structural excavation and shoring activities through the end of this month. This type of wall is called “Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) Wall,” which will use soil reinforcement techniques to strengthen and support the newly realigned on-ramp.

This work may be loud. The schedule is subject to change due to inclement weather or unforeseen operational issues.
Construction Safety
As traffic patterns shift during construction, please remember to drive with extra caution, especially near freeway ramps and intersections. For your safety and the safety of others:
- Slow down when approaching construction zones, ramps and merge areas.
- Check carefully for pedestrians and cyclists near intersections.
- Allow extra space for merging vehicles and avoid sudden lane changes.
Your patience and safe driving help protect workers, fellow motorists and community members traveling through the area.
Closures and Detours
Please plan ahead and expect delays during these times. Nighttime closures typically occur between 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. Specific closures for the week of Oct. 13 include:
- Outside lanes on eastbound and westbound Katella Avenue/Willow Street, at least one lane will be open to traffic at all times
- Northbound I-605 on-ramp from eastbound/westbound Katella Avenue - click here to view detour
- Northbound I-605 loop and straight off-ramps to eastbound and westbound Katella Avenue - click here to view detour

Rendering of Improvements along Katella Avenue

The rendering above highlights planned improvements along Katella Avenue between Coyote Creek Channel and Epson Way. Key features include:
- Reconfiguration of the northbound on- and off-ramps into a T-intersection
- Addition of Class II bike lanes with hatched markings to indicate bike lane transitions
- Installation of a new traffic signal at the northbound I-605/Katella Avenue off-ramp, along with upgraded signals at nearby intersections
- Painted crosswalks and newly constructed sidewalks to enhance pedestrian access and safety
Community Outreach
As part of its comprehensive public awareness campaign, the Public Outreach team is offering opportunities for the community to learn more about the project, its benefits, construction activities, and potential impacts. These include:
- Public webinars
