The rail line through San Clemente reopened Monday, March 25 for regular passenger rail service following emergency work to build a catchment wall to protect the track.
Background: The rail line was closed through San Clemente the evening of Wednesday, Jan. 24, when a landslide on private property above the city-owned Mariposa Trail Pedestrian Bridge caused major damage to the bridge and scattered debris onto the track.
Direct Metrolink to repair and replace existing riprap, limiting the amount to only what’s necessary to protect the track. It’s estimated that 5,100 cubic yards of riprap is needed to protect the track near Mariposa Point and nearly 50 times that amount – 240,000 cubic yards – of sand will be placed.
Due to track work, Metrolink trains will not be in service starting on Tuesday, December 26, 2023, through Friday, December 29, 2023. iShuttle routes 400A, 401B, and 403D will also not be in service during this period due to no Metrolink service.

ORANGE – All regular Metrolink and Amtrak Pacific Surfliner service is scheduled to resume beginning Monday, April 17, after the Orange County Transportation Authority’s emergency construction work has been successful in stopping slope movement and stabilizing the tracks in south San Clemente.
