OCTA, in cooperation with Caltrans, is constructing the I-5 Freeway Improvement Project between State Route 73 (SR-73) and El Toro Road. The project will improve 6.5 miles of I-5 through the cities of Mission Viejo, Lake Forest, Laguna Hills, and Laguna Niguel. Today, nearly 360,000 motorists travel I-5 daily between SR-73 and El Toro Road.
Interstate 5 (I-5) is essential to Orange County's mobility, economy and quality of life. Every day more than 275,600 motorists drive this segment of I-5, through the cities of Irvine and Tustin, to reach residential, commercial, educational and employment destinations.
OCTA, in cooperation with Caltrans, is improving I-5 between SR-73 and El Toro Road. The 6.5-mile project extends through Mission Viejo, Laguna Niguel, Laguna Hills, and Lake Forest and is being constructed in three segments.
Build Alternative 1 proposes an additional I-5 SB off-ramp to independently serve El Toro Road EAST, and El Toro WEST. These two SB off-ramps are proposed in lieu of the one existing SB off-ramps.
To address this travel demand, OCTA and Caltrans are working together to implement the I-5 Widening project from SR-73 to El Toro Road. Construction will be done in three segments. Crews began work on the first segment from Oso Parkway to Alicia Parkway in 2019.
