The Orange County Transportation Authority, in coordination with Metrolink, has completed emergency work to stabilize the railroad tracks in San Clemente.

Passenger rail service, including Amtrak and Metrolink, was stopped in late September out of an abundance of caution and to allow for the emergency repairs. OCTA and its contractors will continue to work in the project area to cover the retaining wall and replant native vegetation.

The rail line is expected to be shut down for passenger service for a total of approximately six weeks, through early June. The study is distinct from the ongoing emergency work that is focused on areas identified as needing immediate reinforcement because of threats to the rail line from coastal erosion and sliding of privately owned hillsides above the tracks. The LOSSAN rail corridor is the only rail connection between areas north of San Diego County and San Diego County, including military operations in Southern California. The LOSSAN rail provides transportation for passengers daily and supports over $1 billion in annual commercial freight movement.

The 20-mile stretch of railroad right of way, extending from Santa Ana in Orange County to Paramount in Los Angeles, was once part of the Pacific Electric Railway System. At this time, the majority of the right of way has been abandoned and is not currently used for mass transit purposes.
