The rocks are being strategically sorted and placed primarily within the area where riprap previously existed to fortify the track and protect against coastal erosion. Project Background Dredging and Placement of Sand for the Coastal Rail Stabilization Priority Projects The Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) has identified a need for companies that services in offshore sand dredging and sand placement at specified locations for its the Coastal Rail Stabilization Priority Projects in Orange County.

At the southern end of the project, near San Clemente State Beach, 1,400 cubic yards of riprap repair, 22,000 cubic yards of engineered revetment, seawall or functionally equivalent structure, and 300,000 cubic yards of sand have been identified as necessary to protect the track.

The sand, fuel, and lubricating fluids used at the facility are all in a designed sealed system. SCAQMD regulates overall regional air quality based on specific criteria pollutants including Ozone, Particulate Matter, Carbon Monoxide, Oxides of Nitrogen, Oxides of Sulfur, Lead, and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs).

The Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) is seeking insight from qualified firms regarding potential solutions and industry best practices related to the dredging and placement of sand for the coastal rail stabilization priority projects.

This project was completed in 2014. The Sand Canyon Avenue Undercrossing project along the LOSSAN rail corridor between Interstate 5 and Oak Canyon/Laguna Canyon Road in Irvine opened to motorists on July 14, 2014. The project lowered Sand Canyon Avenue under the railroad tracks and widened the roadway from four to six lanes.

Approximately 240,000 cubic yards of sand will also be placed on the beach in Areas 1 and 2 between Mariposa Point and North Beach. Crews this week continued preparing the track to safely resume passenger service, including demobilizing construction equipment, testing rail signals, and resurfacing more than 3,600 feet of track.
