In general, the contractor works two shifts, Monday through Saturday – a day shift from approxi-mately 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. and a night shift from approximately 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. While much of the work will take place during the day, some activities, such as placing temporary barriers, striping lanes, shift-ing traffic and demolishing the bridge, must be done at night for safety reasons.

The concrete girders were placed as the primary support for the future northbound freeway lanes as part of the I-5 South County Improvements Project. The project’s big rig team hauled the girders more than 76 miles from Perris to Mission Viejo. Each girder measures roughly 65 feet and weighs 38,500 pounds.

The I-405 Improvement Project allows Orange County to keep pace with expected job, housing and population growth, while providing safe and reliable multimodal travel throughout the region.
