ORANGE – Drivers traveling on I- 405 through Costa Mesa this weekend are urged to use alternate routes because of a scheduled 15-hour closure of the freeway in both directions near the I- 405/SR- 73 connector.
SR-55 is a vital link to other major freeway systems in Orange County, and it is the only freeway providing a direct north-south connection between Central Orange County and the coastal region. Currently, SR-55 between I- 405 and I-5 has four regular lanes and one carpool lane in each direction, as well as merge lanes between some interchanges.

Nearly 360,000 motorists travel I-5 daily between the San Joaquin Hills Toll Road (SR- 73) and El Toro Road. Transportation planners expect traffic volumes to grow 25 percent by 2045.
To address current and future traffic demand, the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA), in partnership with the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), is improving I-5 from north of Interstate 405 (I- 405) to State Route 55 (SR-55). OCTA and Caltrans are working with the neighboring cities of Irvine and Tustin.
