This week’s suspension of service on the rail line is the fifth service interruption in the past three years. Once again, a vital stretch of Southern California’s rail infrastructure has been forced to close because the private property above the railroad has fallen onto the track.

The segment of railroad spanning from Dana Point to the Orange/San Diego County border is currently single track, which is an operational choke point for passenger trains needing to pass in opposite directions, resulting in passenger train delays and limiting opportunities to expand passenger rail service along this rail corridor.

The San Juan Capistrano train station opened in 1894. The station closed in 1966 and railroad service to the town ended, but it reopened in 1974 after Amtrak reinstated service. The station is in historic downtown near Camino Capistrano and Verdugo Street, a short walk from Mission San Juan Capistrano.
