The San Juan Capistrano train station opened in 1894. The station closed in 1966 and railroad service to the town ended, but it reopened in 1974 after Amtrak reinstated service. The station is in historic downtown near Camino Capistrano and Verdugo Street, a short walk from Mission San Juan Capistrano.

The Irvine train station has been serving Amtrak and Metrolink passengers since it opened in 1990. Today nearly 2,000 passengers board Metrolink and Amtrak trains from the Irvine station each weekday, and is one of the most heavily used stations in Orange County.

With a focus on safety and accountability, we plan, fund, and implement countywide projects that include bus and rail transit, freeways and express lanes, rideshare, microtransit, paratransit, active transportation, and environmental programs.

Commuter rail service is also provided to and from Los Angeles, Riverside, and San Diego counties by Metrolink. Amtrak provides intercity rail service. Rail service predominantly follows the central alignment of the I-5 Freeway through the County as well as along the Riverside (SR-91) Freeway to the east.
