At the same time, the Orange County Transportation Authority, which is leading the project, is working to source 240,000 cubic yards of sand as part of the project that will be placed in Areas 1 and 2 north of Mariposa Point.

The Sand Canyon Avenue Grade Separation, a $64 million project that lowered Sand Canyon Avenue under the railroad tracks and widened the roadway, won the award in the bridge category. The newly constructed bridge opened to motorists in July 2014 and improved safety and mobility for the traveling public.

*OCTA is participating in discussions about a sand replenishment program with the County of Orange and other stakeholders to protect the railroad and other infrastructure.

The sand, fuel, and lubricating fluids used at the facility are all in a designed sealed system. SCAQMD regulates overall regional air quality based on specific criteria pollutants including Ozone, Particulate Matter, Carbon Monoxide, Oxides of Nitrogen, Oxides of Sulfur, Lead, and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs).
