OCTA SOUTH ORANGE COUNTY COASTAL RAIL STUDIES In September of 2021, a landslide south of San Clemente shut down the rail line in the area for nineteen days while emergency repairs were completed. This closure prevented both passenger and freight rail trips between the Los Angeles and San Diego regions.

Laguna Niguel/Mission Viejo Metrolink Station The Laguna Niguel/Mission Viejo station was opened in 2002. The station is one-half mile from the San Diego Freeway (I-5), located near major employment centers and attractions in south Orange County, such as the Shops at Mission Viejo, Saddleback College and Mission Hospital. The station serves more than 500 Amtrak and Metrolink passengers daily.

Metrolink, in coordination with the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA), is proposing to extend 1.2 miles of railroad track in Dana Point. The siding track would be constructed adjacent to the existing main track and extend from Victoria Boulevard south to the rail crossing at Beach Road. The proposed project would reduce delays, increase safety, and provide more reliable service.
This project was completed in 2014. The Sand Canyon Avenue Undercrossing project along the LOSSAN rail corridor between Interstate 5 and Oak Canyon/Laguna Canyon Road in Irvine opened to motorists on July 14, 2014. The project lowered Sand Canyon Avenue under the railroad tracks and widened the roadway from four to six lanes.
