Sand Nourishment OCTA is concurrently working to source 240,000 cubic yards of sand that will be placed on the beach in Areas 1 and 2 between Mariposa Point and North Beach. This work may be loud. The schedule is subject to change due to inclement weather or unforeseen operational issues. Train horns may be sounded.

The track moved as much as 28 inches between September 2021 and September 2022 due to storm surge and sand erosion on the coastal side and the gradually sliding hillside on the other. Passenger rail service, including Metrolink and Amtrak, was stopped in late September out of an abundance of caution and to allow for the emergency repairs.

Recurring heavy rains since the project began in October led to delays in the construction schedule. The construction work is being completed on a privately owned slope along 700 feet of rail between the ocean and homes above in the Cyprus Shore Homeowners Association, south of the San Clemente Pier.

Current state planning and project approval policies place great emphasis on reducing travel by automobile and encourage project alternatives that promote short trips where possible, travel by transit, bicycling, walking, and use of zero-emission vehicles. These requirements will affect the environmental review process.
