Changing the way people commute

Helping Orange County drivers get out of their cars and into an alternative mode of transportation is what OCTA’s Share the Ride program is all about. For every driver who switches to taking the bus, the train, joining a carpool or vanpool, or riding a bike, that’s one less vehicle on the road. And that helps reduce congestion and improve our air quality.

OCTA’s Share the Ride program includes helping individuals find alternative commute modes that work best given their starting location and final destination, commute start time and ending work time.

OCTA’s Vanpool Program added a long-distance commuting alternative for people who work in Orange County and live in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside or San Bernardino counties. During the past fiscal year, there were 408 vans in the program serving 103 employer worksites.

The Share the Ride program helped Orange County employers by providing materials and training to companies to help their employees choose an alternative to driving alone. OCTA also helped employers meet their local air quality regulations. As part of that assistance, OCTA helped 63 employers compile their Average Vehicle Ridership (AVR) surveys.

Vehicle miles saved. The 408 vanpools reduced the number of vehicle miles traveled by 32,545,228 during fiscal year 2011-12.
