Cookies and Web Technologies

The Authority makes reasonable efforts to limit the use of "cookies", which are data files stored on your computer by your web browser that provide information about you. However, cookies may be used on our sites when needed to maintain the functionality of an interactive application and are used only during the session in which you access the interactive application. The cookie feature is used to store a temporary identifying tag on your computer. Depending on the settings of your browser or other methods, you can refuse or delete cookie files from your computer. Turning off the cookie option may limit your access to interactive applications of the Authority's websites.

Do Not Track

The Authority’s websites do not respond to “Do Not Track” signals.

Information Collected and Stored Automatically

We may analyze user traffic patterns on our websites from information automatically provided by your browser when you visit our site. This information includes the IP address of your computer or network, the date, time, and page(s) you visited on our site, your browser and operating system, and the referring page (the last webpage you visited before accessing our websites). We may also use the aggregated information from all of our visitors to measure server performance and improve the content of our websites.

Third-Party Support

Google™ Analytics – The Authority uses Google™ Analytics, which is a web and traffic analytics tool that assists the Authority in tracking and reporting on website traffic. Google™ Analytics uses cookies and may track your personal information. For more details on how Google™ Analytics uses your personal data and how you can control information collected by Google™ while accessing the Authority's websites, please visit google.com/policies.

Facebook Business Tools – The Authority uses Facebook Business Tools to integrate our websites with Facebook to better reach and serve people who might be interested in the Authority’s services. Information about what data may be collected about you from Facebook when you visit the Authority’s websites and what Facebook does with that information is available at facebook.com/legal/businesstech.

Third parties, including Facebook, may use cookies, web beacons, and other storage technologies to collect or receive information from your websites and elsewhere on the internet and use that information to provide measurement services and target ads. There are third-party mechanisms available to the public to exercise choice over the collection of information (for example: aboutads.info/choices).

Third party applications are also available to users to improve access to Authority services. These applications may use cookies, identifiers on electronic devices, or other similar technologies to collect data. Please visit the privacy policies of each application to learn more about how your data is collected, the application’s data collection settings, and what options are available to you regarding the collection of your data. The Authority has no affiliation with these third parties, including Google™ and Facebook, and it cannot guarantee or claim responsibility for the accuracy, reliability, or performance of such services. The Authority disclaims any and all liability arising out of the use of any such third-party website or application, and any individual who accesses any website or application does so at his or her own risk.

Sending E-Mail

If you send the Authority an e-mail that includes personal information, we normally will use the information only to respond to your message. However, we may forward your e-mail to another agency if we believe that agency is better prepared to answer your question. If you e-mail the Authority, we will keep a record of that correspondence in accordance with our records retention policy. We do not use information received in e-mails to create personal profiles, and we do not give or sell e-mail information to others for commercial purposes.

Any e-mails that you send are governed by the California Public Records Act (California Government Code section 6250 et seq.) and may become open for public inspection. If you send us a threat or a message that describes or promotes unlawful activity, we will forward the e-mail to the appropriate law enforcement authorities.

SMS Messaging and Consent

OCTA provides a text-and-response(Text4Next) SMS service for transit riders to request real-time bus arrival information. When a rider texts a bus stop number (e.g., “1234”) to 628246 short-code phone number, OCTA replies with the next bus arrival times and any relevant service alerts (e.g., if the stop is closed).

  • No unsolicited messages are ever sent.
  • No phone numbers are stored beyond transient technical processing to deliver responses.
  • No subscription or marketing messaging are involved.

The service also supports standard “STOP” and “HELP” keywords to comply with industry requirements. However, these flows are functionally unnecessary because OCTA never sends messages unless directly responding to a rider’s request.

OCTA and its vendors do not sell, share, or retain phone numbers. Message and data rates may apply according to your mobile carrier.
