The SR-22 features two continuous access carpool lanes (one in each direction) from approximately Tustin Avenue to Valley View Street. Unlike other carpool lanes in Orange County where carpoolers are restricted as to where they enter and exit the carpool lanes, continuous access carpool lanes allow access at any point along the existing route. This operational feature provides greater access to both the lanes themselves and all off-ramps.
A first in Southern California, the lanes are now completely open and operating. Carpoolers can expect to be able to access the SR-22 continuous access lanes, at the very least, from now until the completion of an evaluation scheduled to be completed in approximately late 2008. When the evaluation is completed, transportation officials will determine whether continuous access lanes should be made permanent on SR-22.
