Sand Canyon Grade Separation Project

The Sand Canyon Avenue grade separation project is located along the Los Angeles – San Diego – San Luis Obispo (LOSSAN) rail corridor. The project will lower Sand Canyon Avenue under the railroad crossing to provide a grade-separated crossing. The project area is between Interstate 5 and Oak Canyon/Laguna Canyon Road in the City of Irvine. A railroad bridge for two existing railroad tracks and a future third track will be built, while Sand Canyon Avenue will be lowered and widened from four to six lanes.

Construction of a railroad and roadway bypass are necessary to build the project. Sand Canyon Avenue will remain open during construction; however, several 30-day detours will be required. Construction will be completed by May 2014, and the project is budgeted at $56 million.

The City of Irvine is providing project updates to the community.
