Improvements on the way for Tustin Metrolink Station

There are two major projects in Tustin that will enhance the station experience for commuters – a new parking structure and the Tustin Wye pedestrian walkway. Both of these improvements will allow commuters easier and safer access to the station area and allow for the expected future growth in rail service and ridership under the Metrolink Service Expansion Program The increased service is anticipated to be phased in over the next five years, depending on ridership and available operating funds.

  • New Parking Structure – Watry Design, Inc. was recently selected to design a 5-story, 825-space parking structure at the Tustin Metrolink station. The parking structure will be built on the existing surface parking lot and provide over 500 additional parking spaces. Bus facilities and pedestrian access will also be improved through this project. Final plans are expected the first part of 2010 and the awarding of a construction contract is anticipated in mid-2010, with a 12-month construction schedule. The new parking structure should be open for business in summer 2011.
  • Tustin Wye Pedestrian Walkway – Later this year, passengers using the Tustin Station will be able to access the north side of the station (across the tracks) on a new walkway intended for use by pedestrians and bicycles. The Tustin Wye is a pedestrian walkway that will connect the existing walkway along Dow Avenue with the Metrolink station platform. The landscaped walkway will be built over abandoned BNSF right of way by removing the existing track and paving the area. The entire length of the walkway will be approximately 640 feet from end to end and will be compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act. It will include fencing on both sides of the path, tree coverage, and overhead lighting. The design for the Tustin Wye is nearing completion and construction is scheduled to begin September 2009. The pedestrian walkway is expected to be complete and open to the public in December 2009.
