Imperial Highway (SR-90) Grade Separation Project

Project Description
The Imperial Highway (SR-90) Grade Separation project is widening and separating Imperial Highway from the existing railroad at the Esparanza Road and Orangethorpe Avenue intersection in Yorba Linda. The grade separation will help reduce traffic time and enhance safety.
The grade separation project spans the area along the SR-90 between La Palma Avenue and approximately two-thirds of a mile north of Esparanza Road and Orangethorpe Avenue.

Provided by local, state and federal funds, the $91 million project will include a bridge over the Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) Railway crossing and Esparanza Road and Orangethorpe Avenue intersection.
Construction Timeline
The SR-90 grade separation construction began on Feb. 16, 2007, and the estimated completion date is late 2010. Construction of the bridge over the railroad crossing is expected to begin in April 2008. A temporary detour road for commuters, a retaining wall and soundwall also will be constructed.
Due to an increase in passenger and freight rail traffic, the project is designed to help optimize travel time for drivers traveling within Yorba Linda and Anaheim. Once built over the railroad crossing, the bridge will enhance safety by improving pedestrian accessibility, alleviating traffic congestion and eliminating wait time for motorists caused by passing trains.
Roadway Closures
Traffic lanes will remain open during the day to avoid impacting commuters and businesses in the area. However, there will be a one-time road closure in the future to accommodate construction work. Lane closures will be scheduled between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. Residents, business and affected local agencies will be provided with advance notification of detours and the scheduling of closures.
