I-5/Camino Capistrano Project

Chokepoint Improvements | I-5/Camino Capistrano Project

Project Description
In an effort to enhance traffic flow in San Juan Capistrano, OCTA is proposing, in cooperation with the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), to improve the southbound ramp interchange on the San Diego Freeway (I-5) at Camino Capistrano.

Currently, vehicles at this interchange back up onto the freeway, causing excessive congestion. The proposed project would widen the off-ramp and Camino Capistrano at the ramp intersection.

Camino Capistrano ProjectProposed project improvements:

  • Add a merging lane to the southbound off-ramp
  • Add a second southbound left turn exit lane
  • Provide a yield-controlled, right-turn only lane to the southbound on-ramp
  • Add travel lanes to Camino Capistrano
  • Add a sidewalk on Camino Capistrano
  • Add a bike lane on a portion of Camino Capistrano
  • Replace and extend a soundwall along the off-ramp merging lane.

Status of Project

The environmental document was completed in early 2006, and the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) approved the project in April 2006. Because of funding constraints, design of the project has been delayed and should begin in fall 2008. Should funding become available sooner, design and construction could begin up to two years earlier than indicated on the project timeline.
