Transit Police

On November 13, 2008, OCTA Transit Police Services and the Orange County Transportation Authority partnered with the County of Orange Emergency Operations Center for the California State-wide 2008 Golden Guardian “The Great Shake Out” exercise.  The exercise was conducted in two separate functions; situational awareness and evacuation procedures.  The first phase tested our ability to activate the OCTA Emergency Operations Center in a timely matter, share information and provide a damage assessment to the County Emergency Operations Center.  The second phase activated our emergency evacuation procedures for the OCTA Administrative offices.  The City of Orange Fire Department Safety staff provided support during the second phase of the exercise.  Transit Police Services and the Orange County Transportation Authority continue to work closely to ensure the safety of its employees and users of public transportation.

Special Enforcement

Zero Tolerance – Directed Enforcement

These enforcement days are dedicated to a zero tolerance approach to all laws and policy violations committed on the OCTA buses.  Citations or criminal reports are written for criminal violations, while warnings are more often given for minor violations.  The plain-clothes deputies assigned to the Right-of-Way Detail ride the bus routes most frequently vandalized, as well as those that generate the greatest number of calls for service from TPS.  Additionally, such directed enforcement efforts will be deployed to specific incidents of criminal activity on bus routes, as reported by both Coach Operators and customers of OCTA.

Operation Lifesaver

Transit Police Services is an active member of Operation Lifesaver.  These Operations are sponsored by “Operation Lifesaver”, which advocates rail safety.  Transit Police Services partners with numerous law enforcement agencies throughout the region to promote railroad safety.  Local law enforcement deploys numerous resources and focus their enforcement efforts in areas such as; At-Grade crossings, railroad trespassing, and rail stations.

Fare Enforcement

OCTA and Transit Police Services work closely with the Coach Operators to identify any problematic fare evaders.  Transit Police Services has a deputy assigned to handle reports of fare evasion and conduct investigative work on reported incidents.
