What is a Railroad Crossing?

A railroad crossing is the point where the road intersects with the train tracks.

Enhancing Safety Around the Tracks

This construction is part of OCTA's rail safety enhancement program. OCTA is partnering with local cities on the first countywide effort to enhance rail safety at 50 railroad crossings in Orange County. Countywide improvements will feature safety enhancements for pedestrians and motorists and will include supplemental safety measures to meet the Federal Railroad Administration’s requirements for a quiet zone.

Examples of Safety Enhancements
Upgraded and updated warning devices to warn drivers that train tracks are ahead
Additional gate arms to prevent drivers and pedestrians from crossing the tracks when the gates are lowered allowing a train to pass
Extended and raised medians to deter drivers from driving around lowered gates
Improved signs to warn drivers and pedestrians that train tracks are ahead and to yield to the right of way to trains
Coordinated local traffic signals with cities to prevent vehicles from stalling on the tracks

Railroad Crossings in Your Community

The 50 railroad crossings are spread throughout eight cities in the county: Anaheim, Dana Point, Irvine, Orange, San Clemente, San Juan Capistrano, Santa Ana and Tustin.

Made Possible by Measure M2

OCTA’s Measure M2, Orange County’s half-cent sales tax for transportation will fund 88 percent of the rail safety enhancement program, and the remaining 12 percent will be funded by participating cities.
