OCTA is preparing the final design for a new northbound lane on SR-57 from Orangethorpe Avenue to Lambert Avenue through the communities of Fullerton and Brea.  It is expected that the widening of the freeway in the northbound direction can generally be accommodated within the existing right of way.  In addition, OCTA is preparing an environmental analysis to add a new northbound lane on SR-57 between Katella Street and Lincoln Avenue in the Anaheim area.  This study will identify any potential environmental impacts of the project and will propose mitigation measures to minimize any unavoidable impacts. Construction is expected to begin on the first segments of the project in 2010.

Reducing Traffic and Congestion

For more than 50 years, the Orange Freeway (SR-57) has been integrally linked to Orange County’s growth and legacy. During its five-decade history, this road has been uniquely intertwined with the evolution of many of the county’s most notable attractions. Like the region and destinations it serves, the SR-57 is a classic landmark unto itself.

Improving Travel on SR- 57

A new and improved edition of SR-57 is now under way. This includes adding a northbound lane from north of the SR-91 near Orangethorpe Avenue in Placentia to Lambert Road in Brea, as well as between Katella Avenue and Lincoln Avenue in Anaheim. These improvements will reduce congestion, increase traffic flow and enhance the safety of one of Orange County’s signature freeways.

The Orangethorpe to Lambert segment was the first project to be approved with the completion of the environmental phase in December 2007. The project is currently in the design phase with construction scheduled to begin in the summer of 2010, depending on state funding availability.

The environmental phase for the Katella to Lincoln segment was completed in November 2009. The design phase is expected to be completed by fall 2010, with construction scheduled to begin in summer 2011, depending on state funding availability.
