Freeing Up the 55

This project will increase freeway capacity, reduce congestion and smooth traffic flow by adding new lanes and delivering operational improvements between interchanges.

Snapshot of Current Congestion

  • SR-55 carries 295,000 vehicles per day
  • Estimated to 332,000, an increase of 13 percent in the future

Upgrades

The new lanes and improvements will generally be delivered within the existing right of way. The project’s major elements and segments  consist of:

  • Adding new lanes to SR-55 between SR-22 on the north and I-405 on the south
  • Delivering  improvements on SR-55 between SR-91 on the north and SR-22 on the south

In addition to these projects, federal and state funds will be used to deliver a new street overcrossing and carpool ramps at Alton Avenue.

All of these improvements will be developed in cooperation with local jurisdictions and communities.
