Freeing Up The Freeway

The project will relieve congestion by adding new lanes and operational improvements along two key stretches of I-5 in south Orange County.

Snapshot of Congestion Today

  • I-5 carries about 342,000 vehicles per day near the El Toro “Y”
  • Conditions result in approximately 5,300 daily vehicle hours of delay
  • Some I-5 segments operate at Level of Service “F” in the mornings and afternoons
  • Future vehicles per day are expected to rise to 460,000, an increase of 35 percent

Widening the "Y"

This project includes new lanes from approximately the El Toro Interchange in Lake Forest to SR-73 in Mission Viejo.

Additionally, new lanes will be added between Pacific Coast Highway and the Avenida Pico in San Clemente.
