California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is preparing a project study report to identify ways to relieve freeway congestion along the Santa Ana Freeway (Interstate 5) between the Costa Mesa Freeway (State Route 55) and the Orange Freeway (State Route 57) in Santa Ana. The study is looking at ways to increase capacity and improve traffic flow through this section of Interstate 5 (I-5) that connects four major freeways in central Orange County. The study is expected to be completed in early 2009.
Caltrans, in conjunction with OCTA, is currently preparing the conceptual engineering study for the I-5 improvement project between the SR-55 and SR-57 freeways.  This project will seek to relieve congestion on the High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes on the I-5 freeway between the SR-55 and SR-57 area. The conceptual engineering study is estimated to be completed by early summer 2010. Once a range of proposed project alternatives are identified, OCTA will determine the appropriate timeframe to initiate the environmental studies phase.

A Smoother Ride

Increase capacity and reduce congestion by constructing improvements on I-5 and SR-55 in central Orange County.

Additional Lanes

Deliver capacity and operational improvements on:

  • I-5 between Fourth Street and Newport Boulevard
  • SR-55 between Fourth Street and Edinger Avenue
  • I-5 between SR-55 and SR-57

Projects will be generally constructed within the existing right-of-way and specific improvements will be coordinated with local jurisdictions and communities. Additionally, regional plans for I-5 call for improvements between the “Orange Crush” to SR-91.

Benefits

Projects will increase freeway capacity and reduce congestion at key sections of I-5.
