The completion of a new carpool lane and improvements to the Avenida Pico Interchange, the I-5 South County Improvements Project is complete.
Project Overview
This 5.7 mile project, a partnership between OCTA and Caltrans, extended the carpool lane in each direction of I-5 from between its prior terminus in San Juan Capistrano and San Clemente. The project also reconstructed the Avenida Pico interchange, adding dual left-turn lanes to both on-ramps and widening the northbound on-ramp to three lanes.
Project Benefits

Added a carpool lane in both directions on I-5 between Avenida Pico and San Juan Creek Road

Improved the sight distance on the southbound horizontal curve north of PCH

Reconstructed the Avenida Pico interchange, including widening the northbound Avenida Pico on-ramp to three lanes

Provided dual left-turn lanes to northbound and southbound Avenida Pico on-ramps

Added a dedicated bicycle lane at Avenida Pico interchange to enhance countywide bicycle facilities

Added soundwalls where needed
